Emotions versus logic

I recently heard from a client who is entering university younger than most. He comes from a good family and is receiving a nice education. His grades and test scores are where they need to be to have a lot of options moving forward. But he is worrying a lot. Sound familiar?

A few months ago, we talked about the merits and tradeoffs of the computer science programs at UT-Dallas versus UT-Austin. We found ourselves confronting the same anxiety again only dressed up a little bit differently. Previously, I presented a lot of information

This time, I took a different approach. Instead of confronting the manifestation of his worries (finding the right university, return on investment), I tried to dig a little deeper with some tough love.

"I recall that we spoke about this topic a few months ago. What you may be struggling with is the rational at odds with the emotional. Logically, you know a degree from UTD is just fine for your sorts of academic and professional goals. It is a great value for the money and is a up and coming university. I love this recent article in the Texas Tribune: https://www.texastribune.org/2016/04/09/how-ut-dallas-has-climbed-ranks-texas-top-colleges/

Emotionally, it is hard if not impossible to stop worrying. You are confronting a lot of unknowns. As I have mentioned in the past, the most important thing we can do is focus on factors you can control. Let’s take things one step at a time and take ownership of this process. You haven’t even started your applications yet, and you’re already worried about being denied! Logically, you and I both know this is ridiculous. Regardless, we can worry about admissions outcomes when that bridge presents itself.

I can sit here all day and tell you you’re going to be fine. It is up to you how you confront this anxiety."
