Statistics from University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences 2015
I came across a very useful link posting detailed statistics about admission and enrollment for the 2019 Class for the College of Natural Sciences. Outside of some of the honors programs and Architecture, I have never seen such a detailed and transparent list of relevant data for prospective applicants.
You can view this data directly on the CNS website here: https://cns.utexas.edu/students/future/freshmen#2015-freshmen-class-profile
Notably, the average admit has an ACT of 30 (SAT 1950). About 95% of the incoming class comes from the top quarter and, as per state law, the enrollment matches the 75% automatic admissions threshold required by state law. These statistics coincidence with my professional policy of taking on clients who have a minimum of a 29 on the ACT and are in the top quarter of their high school class.
Interestingly, the gender breakdown is almost 60% women versus 40% men. Cool for women's access to science!
It is also worth noting that some of the least known majors like Human Ecology or Astronomy have the least number of applicants. If you are looking to stand out in the applicant pool, and especially when UT is trying to fill spaces, it may be worth doing more research outside of the usual suspects like computer science, biology, and math.
